Elemental Blessing – Invoking Elements for Wedding/Handfasting

As part of my training to become a Gythia I have researched and studied various rituals including wedding and handfasting unions. The process of researching different wedding elements and options took me a little over two months. To honor all that work I’m going to share the components and what I learn in my research and study here.

Most of the different elements of ritual can be moved around to fit the setting, the individuals, and a number of other factors.

Invoking the Elements

For many pagans a ritual includes invoking or acknowledging the elements and cardinal directions. Without this component the ritual may feel incomplete for those who use this in their practice. For something as important as a union or wedding ceremony this calls for something special. The invocation below is written in the from of asking for blessing, this helps soften it for non-pagan audience members and invites additional gives to those celebrating their union.

[Indicating toward the east]

From the east, blow the blessing of air. May you choose fresh beginnings with the rising of each sun. Gifts of communication – speaking from the heart, with a clear mind and calm body. Know that growth can be found in sharing the silences.

[Indicating toward the south]

In the south, spark the blessings of fire. May warmth fill your home and hearth. Passion to ignite the heart and body. Together you will light even the darkest times.

[Indicating toward the west]

From the west, pour the blessings of water. May you find the calm of deep water.  Embrace the flow of healing, flexibility, and change.

[Indicating toward the north]

In the north, grow the blessings of earth. May your foundation be steady as stone. Let love nourish & sustain you inspiring new growth together. Find peace in stability and the promise of a true home.
