Painted Bread -Adding to Ritual with Fun Edible Art

Painted bread is a quick way & decorative way to draw intentions into food as well as a fun activity to do with children or a kindred.

You will also need egg yolk, a few new paint brushes, and a loaf of bread or rolls , already baked, for small dinner rolls this can be done on the raw dough because the baking time so fast but it is easier to paint on the less yielding surface once it has been baked.

  • Leftover coffee
  • Egg yolks
  • Beet paint or beetroot powder
  • Lightly baked bread or dough
  1. Prepare bread
    • If you are baking bread fresh bake until just starting to brown (until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees) then remove and allow to cool 15-20 until cool enough to handle lightly.
    • Take and bake bread and rolls is also great for this application. If the bread is already partially baked no need to cook further before painting.
    • Take and bake rolls can be painted raw or partially cooked given their short baking time. If you are using this as a kindred activity place rolls on individual pieces of parchment paper. This allows everyone room to paint but makes it easy to transfer to a baking sheet when  they are painted.
  2. Make you eggwash paints.
    • Place the coffee in a small saucepan on the stove over medium-high heat and reduce until you have approximately a quarter cup of concentrate.
    • Mix a small amount of the egg yolk with the concentrate. The more you add, the lighter the color on your bread will be.

For variety, mix a darker and lighter shade for contrasting or make up other colors such as the beetroot red, you can also just use food coloring for a similar effect.
